RESUMO

Achieving error-free health care is critically vital and includes freedom from the occurrence of medication errors, which, as yet, is an unrealized goal in the United States. The purpose of this study was to minimize or potentially eliminate medication errors by adding training in mindfulness thinking to the current system protocol. The goal of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to determine whether training nurses in mindfulness thinking founded on the Dossey Integral Theory changed the frequency and severity of medication administration errors. Data analysis included the following steps: recording of data using the NCC MERP (National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting) instrument, statistical analysis using paired t test, and a logistical interpretation of descriptive statistics. An error reduction of 73.3% between pre- and posttraining mean for the experimental group was observed. This study may add to the limited body of research related to mindfulness and the resultant reduction in medication errors.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Missed nursing care is required care that is delayed, incomplete, or left undone during a nurse's working shift. Missed nursing care is most often studied in adult populations; however, it may have significant consequences in pediatric and neonatal care settings. The purpose of this integrative review is to describe missed nursing care in pediatric and neonatal nursing care settings. METHODS: SCOPUS and PubMed were used in the literature search. Multiple combinations of the keywords and phrases "missed nursing care," "pediatric," "neonatal," "care left undone," or "nursing care rationing" were used for the literature search. Missed nursing care is a relatively new topic as the first article on the subject was published in 2006; therefore, inclusion criteria were set to English articles published between January 1, 2006 and October 11, 2019 that reported on missed nursing care in pediatric and neonatal inpatient care settings. RESULTS: Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria. Missed nursing care in pediatric and neonatal nursing care settings is associated with workload, patient acuity, work environment, and nurse characteristics, and is related to prolonged hospitalization of preterm infants. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Providing nurses with an adequate amount of resources and tools to avoid missed nursing care will continue to improve care delivery. Missed nursing care and related patient and nurse outcomes in diverse pediatric and neonatal samples remains an area for future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Differences between patients' and nurses' perceptions of good nursing might be one of the barriers to optimal nursing care that matches the preferences of patients. A better understanding of the attributes of Good Nursing Care across different settings, circumstances, and patient populations will provide an integrated idea about Good Nursing Care, which can contribute to nursing theory development and future research. PURPOSE: This study aimed to integrate the literature on patients' and nurses' perceptions of what constitutes Good Nursing Care and thereby identify the similarities and differences in patients' and nurses' perceptions of Good Nursing Care. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed, CINAHL, and MEDLINE was conducted for article published between January 2000 and June 2017. A total of 18 studies were identified and assessed using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. The studies were analyzed and synthesized using Swanson's theory of caring as the theoretical framework. RESULTS: Some dissents and agreements were found between patients and nurses regarding the crucial attributes of Good Nursing Care. While "enabling," such as providing information, coaching, and guidance, was more emphasized by patients, "being with" (being present at the bedside) was more emphasized by nurses. "Doing for," especially expert performance and enhancing physical comfort, was the most frequently mentioned attribute of Good Nursing Care by both patients and nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Theoretical developments regarding Good Nursing Care-characterized by a balance between sufficient nursing knowledge and competent technical skills on one hand and patient empowerment based on trusting relationships on the other hand-would promote the provision of Good Nursing Care in clinical practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the nurse care for the spiritual hospitalized elderly's dimension. METHOD: a qualitative study, based on Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring. The study included 17 nurses working in a geriatric center in Salvador City, Bahia State, Brazil. The collection of testimonies occurred between January and April of 2018, through an interview. RESULTS: spiritual care were dialogue, encouragement and respect for religious activities, embracement, empathy. One of the obstacles to providing this care was the lack of preparation in accessing the elderly's spiritual dimension. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: spirituality is a dimension of human and holistic nursing care. Caring for the spirit contributes to foster transpersonal care. The difficulty may be in the lack of nurses' preparation. It is necessary that they cultivate and live their own spirituality, transmitting the understanding in each care relationship.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine the validity and reliability of the Spiritual Care Competency Scale (SCCS) among nurses in China. DESIGN: Methodological research. METHODS: After the SCCS was translated into Chinese, the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the SCCS (C-SCCS) were evaluated using a convenience sample of 800 nurses recruited from different healthcare centres. The construct validity of the C-SCCS was determined by an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with promax rotation. Pearson's correlation coefficients of the C-SCCS and the Palliative Care Spiritual Care Competency Scale (PCSCCS-M) were computed to assess the concurrent validity and construct validity of the C-SCCS. To verify the quality of the component structure, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). We tested the internal consistency and stability of the measure using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and the Guttman split-half coefficient, respectively, and a factorial analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 709 participants completed the questionnaire (response rate: 88.63%), and all completed questionnaires were suitable for analysis. Three factors were abstracted from the EFA and explained 58.19% of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the three subscales were .93, .92, and .89, and the Guttman split-half coefficient for the C-SCCS was .84. The CFA indicated a well-fitting model, and the significant correlations between the C-SCCS and the PCSCCS-M (r=0.67, p<0.01) showed adequate concurrent validity. Nurses' education and income level showed a significant association with the C-SCCS score. CONCLUSION: The C-SCCS was shown to be a psychometrically sound instrument for evaluating Chinese nurses' spiritual care competencies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of perioperatively applied guided imagery on nausea, satisfaction, and anxiety. DESIGN: This is a prospective randomized controlled study. METHODS: In addition to standard treatment and nursing care, guided imagery was applied to the intervention group once in the preoperative period, once on the first day of postoperative period, twice in the second and third days, for six times in total. Only standard treatment and nursing care were given to the patients of the control group. FINDINGS: Anxiety and intensity of pain were significantly higher in the control group than the intervention group, and the level of satisfaction and sleep quality were lower in the control group than the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: Results support that guided imagery can be useful in improving perianesthetic symptoms and can be a part of nursing care.

RESUMO

AIM: This study explores Australian clinical nurses' and midwives' familiarity with a new code of conduct and understanding in what ways the code is important for nurses as they carry out clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Codes specify the expectations of nurses' responsibilities, legal requirements, behaviour and conduct. Being familiar with the code is central to being a professional nurse or midwife. As nursing continues to advance, updating the code is crucial to maintain professional and safe practice. DESIGN: This project utilized a cross-sectional descriptive design. METHODS: A survey was developed incorporating Likert-type scale assessments of the 7 value statements from the 2018 Australian Nurses' Code of Conduct for familiarity and importance. The survey included open-ended questions to elicit clinical nurses' experiences of conduct breaches, opinions regarding usefulness and relevance of the code for current practice. Data were collected at an acute care hospital in Sydney during January 2018. RESULTS: Significant differences relating to cultural and patient-centred approaches were revealed in the study. The new value involving the role of research was least understood and ranked least important by nurses and midwives. Professional 'integrity' resonated with participants when considering the behaviour of nurses, and short, unambiguous values were the most popular. Additionally, a substantial number of participants had no knowledge of the code or were not aware of the recently revised version. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: A code of conduct provides structure and guidance for workplace values and principles. A respected code is important to the nursing profession to help prevent inappropriate and incompetent behaviour and as a guide for nursing performance. Nurses in this study claimed the code was highly relevant to their work as a nurse and was incorporated into their daily practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to identify, in scientific productions, nursing interventions in palliative care in children and adolescents with cancer. METHOD: integrative review of the literature through the databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, IBECS, LILACS and SCIELO, carried out in October and November 2017. RESULTS: we analyzed 18 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that, among the articles selected, Brazil is the country with the largest number of publications and that interventions such as music therapy, massage, ludic application, early consultation of palliative care, social interventions and physical exercises aimed at the resolution of a specific symptom obtained better results when compared to interventions that aimed at the comprehensiveness of palliative care. FINAL CONSIDERATION: we conclude that greater emphasis should be given to palliative care in academic and professional training and that further studies in search of the best evidence should be conducted to support nursing Evidence-Based Practices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Compassion is the core of nursing care and the basis of ethical codes. Due to the complex and abstract nature of this concept, there is a need for further investigations to explore the meaning and identify compassionate nursing care. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify and describe compassionate nursing care based on the experiences of nurses, patients, and family caregivers. RESEARCH DESIGN: This was a qualitative exploratory study. Data were analyzed using the conventional content analysis method. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: Nurses, hospitalized patients, and family caregivers in different educational hospitals in an urban area of Iran were selected from February 2016 to December 2017 using a purposeful sampling method (n = 34). In-depth and semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, and field notes were used for data collection. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The study was approved by the University's Ethics Committee. The participants were informed about the aim and method of the study, reasons for recording the interviews, confidentiality of data, and voluntary nature of participation in this study. FINDINGS: Data from interviews and filed notes were analyzed and classified into three themes: "effective interaction," "professionalism," and "continuous comprehensive care." DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Emerged themes of this study involved holistic care in the current literature on nursing with an emphasis on effective interaction and professionalism. Nurses can understand patients' and family caregivers' comprehensive needs through interaction skills. In addition, clinical proficiency, maintaining professional ethics' standards along with holism, and continuity in care are examples of compassionate care. Education program about compassionate care can enhance the quality of nursing care.

RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this study was to explore how the theory of unpleasant symptoms (TOUS) has been used in the methodological design and analysis of symptom research. DESIGN: An integrative review, using Whittemore and Knafl's approach. DATA SOURCES: Searches were conducted between 26 January-10 February 2018. Databases included CINAHL Complete, PubMed, Proquest Nursing and Allied Health Source, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, Academic Search Complete and Google Scholar. REVIEW METHODS: A systematic approach to searching, screening and analysing the literature was applied. The matrix method, content analysis, constant comparison, counting and clustering were used. RESULTS: Sixty-four records were included. Most studies were quantitative, cross-sectional, instrument-based and conducted in the USA. Various symptoms and patient populations were represented and each of the TOUS concepts were explored. CONCLUSION: Although the theory has a role to play in furthering symptom science, attention should be paid to the areas of the model and of symptom research that have received less attention. More complex statistical approaches and big data will help to illuminate symptom experiences. Additional focus on intervention studies and all symptom dimensions will help to advance symptom science research. IMPACT: This review is the first to provide a comprehensive, systematic summary of the uses of the TOUS across the research literature to date. This theory is a diverse, holistic middle-range theory capable of being applied to multiple symptoms and populations. Researchers should consider using the theory as a conceptual framework for studies to advance symptom science and explore symptoms holistically.
